IN a plot that could make for a gripping movie, a flamboyant self-proclaimed prophet is under fire for a jaw-dropping scandal involving false prophecies and doctored news!
A charismatic leader from Nyabira in Mashonaland East Province with a flock of over 400 devoted followers on a WhatsApp group, the pastor’s divine revelations may be more smoke and mirrors than sacred insight!
In December last year, he sparked alarm when he sent a chilling message to his WhatsApp group saying;
“I am seeing an accident of an aeroplane in Zimbabwe, so please pray that it be averted.”
His followers, eager to heed his warnings, had no idea this was just the beginning of a bizarre saga.
Fast forward to late December, last year: a tragic plane crash did occur but not in Zimbabwe! Instead, the calamity struck in South Korea.
Undeterred, the crafty prophet manipulated the news, claiming the crash had happened in Zimbabwe .
“Horror in Zimbabwe This Morning As Plane Crash Claims 179 Lives,” blared the sensational headline of the doctored news that he sent out.
One overly enthusiastic church member even took it upon themselves to spread the fabricated story saying the true man of God’s prophecy has finally come to pass.
“Munhu wa Mwari akaratidzwa chiratidzo chekudonha kwe ndege musi wa 12 December? A man of God has been shown the vision of the plane crash on December 12” reads a message in the group
However, when this undercover reporter reached out to him for answers, feigning a desperate need for spiritual guidance, the the self-proclaimed prophet confirmed that last year he saw a vision of a plane crash in Zimbabwe and it came to pass when 179 people died in the plane crash that happened in the country.
He assured to help this reporter and gave him directions to his church.
“Come to my church. Where are you now? Come to my church, its in Nyabvira, I can give you directions. Yes, I prophesied about the plane crash in Zimbabwe and when it happened I sent the news in the group.
“We will open a branch even in Bulawayo. I have six years building this branch, just come,” he insisted.
When the reporter revealed his true identity, the prophet abruptly ended the call.
“I don’t have a comment on this. Look for the person who sent the news. I never sent those and I never prophesied about airplane crash,” he fumed.
An anonymous congregant spilled the tea, revealing suspicions that he was behind the fabricated news.
“We just follow because we don’t prophesy like him. But I suspect he is the one manufacturing news. I tried telling others that the crash was in South Korea, but I was blamed and seen as a defiant person. The prophet is the one who sent the news” the member said
