PSL concludes with 553 goals, 212 players on target

THE 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League action concluded at the weekend on 553 goals after a total of 306 matches that were played all over the country.

Last year, 567 goals were scored.

Before the Week 34 fixtures, the country’s elite football league was on 538 goals meaning the last round of matches produced a total of 15 strikes.

Highlanders’ Lynoth Chikuhwa grabbed his 17th goal of the season when they drew one-all against Yadah Stars at Barbourfields Stadium.

Chikuhwa finished as the season’s Top Goal Scorer in a campaign in which 212 players were on target.

Two of his 17 goals were from the spot as the league finished with 35 goals scored from the spot.

There was one red card on the last day of the season taking the total number of red cards in 2024 to 23.

The 23rd red card of the season was shown to Jameson Masaza of Bulawayo Chiefs.

The league finished with 10 own goals, two hat-tricks and 20 braces.

Week 34 fixtures had four home wins that were posted by GreenFuel, Bikita Minerals, ZPC Kariba and Manica Diamonds over Dynamos, Hwange, Simba Bhora and Bulawayo Chiefs respectively.

There was a single away win (CAPS United 1 Ngezi Platinum Stars 3).

Dethroned champions, Ngezi Platinum were the biggest scorers of the weekend.

There were three goalless draws (Herentals 0-0 Chicken Inn, FC Platinum 0-0 TelOne, Arenel 0-0 Chegutu Pirates) and Chicken Inn goal-minder Donovan Bernard, took the number of his clean sheets to an impressive 20.

In that regard, Donovan is heavily tipped to clinch the Goalkeeper of the Year Award. Last year, Bosso’s Ariel Sibanda won the award after he finished the season with 19 clean sheets.
