NEW: Public urged to take early free cholera treatment

Members of the public should get early free cholera treatment from council clinics, the Harare City Council has said.

This comes as 21 suspected cases and seven confirmed cases of the diarrhoeal disease have been recorded in Harare.

Of the confirmed cases, Budiriro has four, Glen View 3 has two, and one is from Mt Pleasant Heights.

HCC director of health services Dr Prosper Chonzi said: “Treatment of all diarrhoea cases and abdominal discomfort is free at council clinics. The medicines are there at the clinics.

“If someone has cholera, there is no room for oral rehydration at home; get to the clinic and get treated. Incubation period is usually hours to five days. For children it can be very fast; you can lose a child in less than two hours.”
