NINE pupils from Josiah Chinamano Primary School in Bulawayo’s Emakhandeni suburb were injured when their classroom roof was blown off by heavy winds.

The school’s deputy headmistress, Mavis Mkhwananzi, said three girls and six boys all Grade Six pupils, were injured on Thursday when they were hit by falling asbestos sheets.

She said the injured pupils who sustained cuts on their hands and legs, were rushed to Mpilo Central hospital where they were treated and discharged.

“One girl was bleeding from the head and she had four cuts. The others had cuts on their hands and legs. We immediately called an ambulance and they were rushed to Mpilo hospital,” said Mkhwananzi.

She said the winds damaged a number of classrooms at the council run school.

“The city council workers came and they’ve already started repairing the roof.

“They brought new asbestos,” said Mkhwananzi.
