THE Bulawayo City Council will today start replacing roofing sheets at Sidojiwe Flats in Belmont which were blown off during a storm, leaving 26 families without shelter.The Mayor, Councillor Martin Moyo, yesterday told Chronicle it would take about three days to repair the damage.
Twenty six families were left homeless by the disaster that struck on Saturday at around 3 PM.
The affected families have been accommodated by other tenants in the building but the situation is desperate because three families are sharing one room.
Clr Moyo appealed to residents to take an active part in assisting the affected families.
“The council starting tomorrow will replace the roofing structure but it is more than just the roof that needs to be restored. People’s property has been drenched by rain. As we speak they do not have blankets, clothes or food hence we appeal to well wishers to help the families in need,” said Clr Moyo.
No well wishers have offered any assistance so far and the families survive on the little they get from the other tenants in the building.
The building accommodates about 189 people according to local councillor Thabitha Ngwenya.
A resident at the flat, Thandiwe Mlilo, said she was still trying to come to terms with the disaster.
“A family has given us accommodation for now but it is so frustrating because we are crowded in one room .We are about 15 people living in one room, we are in desperate need of help,” said Mlilo.
