A 70-YEAR-OLD man was yesterday sentenced to 10 years in prison after he raped his granddaughter.
David Mtetwa, 70, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Harare regional magistrate, Gloria Takundwa.
Of the 10 years, two were suspended on condition he doesn’t commit a similar offence in the next five years. Eight years shall be effective.
The minor, aged 10, is a pupil at a school in Chinamhora.
The court heard that in November last year, at Savanhu Village, in Chinamhora, Mtetwa was left in the custody of the minor girl, together with her two brothers. Mtetwa went to the child’s bedroom, while she was sleeping with her brothers, and he started beating the two boys, till they escaped through the window.
Mtetwa remained with the girl and got into her bed and raped her.
She cried for help but no one came to her rescue.
The minor started bleeding and, when her mother came back from work, she refused to tell her what had transpired.
She later reported the rape to her teacher, who took her to the police.
Netsai Mushayabasa appeared for the State.
