CHIPINGE Town Council says it is owed in excess of $60 million in unpaid rates and related services by residents and businesses.
The local authority’s finance chairperson Councillor Lovemore Mkwapati said some ratepayers, whose unpaid bills span months and years, are in arrears of various amounts.
Cllr Mkwapati said non-payment of utility bills affects smooth service delivery.
Outstanding debts also result in the municipality’s failure to complete projects and efficiently service existing ones, he added.
The local authority has since started taking steps to recover the debts by disconnecting water supply for defaulting customers.
Cllr Mkwapati urged residents who have been disconnected to pay their bills or make payment plans to settle debts at council offices.
