BULAWAYO-born Tinashe Bere continues to make waves in the United States of America where he recently got named in the Freshman College Football All-America Team.
The 20-year old who plays linebacker is on a full sports scholarship at Duke University, one of the best learning institutions in the whole world after being spotted while turning out for Sycamore High School.
Reports from the US have it that Bere who stands at 1,85 metres and weighs 104 kilogrammes is fifth on the team with 58 tackles while adding 4,5 tackles for lost yardage, 1,5 sacks, two quarterback pressures and one caused fumble.
In an interview on Monday, Bere who describes himself as coming from humble beginnings says he was keeping alive his dream of one day playing in the lucrative National Football League (NFL).
On his honorary mention, the youngster sees it as one of the best things that have happened to him in his sports life.
“As for NFL it is still a dream I am chasing step by step and the honorary mention is one of the best things that have happened to my sports life so far and I would like to thank God, parents and coaches for the overwhelming support they show in me without them all this would not be possible,’’ said Bere.
A son of mechanical engineer Musatya Bere and nurse Thenjiwe Ndebele, Bere grew up in Bulawayo’s high density suburb of Nketa 9, went to Manondwane Primary School as well as Mary Ward Catholic School in Kwekwe. He moved to the US together with his parents at the age of nine.
A nephew of former Zimbabwe international rugby players Vusumuzi and Jafet Ndebele, Bere, according to his positive progression might make a breakthrough into the NFL soon.
Another Zimbabwe-born star, 24-year-old Stansly Maponga, recently signed up for New York Giants in the NFL. Previously, Maponga, a left outside linebacker turned out for the Atlanta Falcons also in the NFL.
