JOURNALISTS from various media houses in Bulawayo will today trade their pens, notebooks, voice recorders and microphones for soccer boots when they go up against each other in the annual Vaiton Refrigeration Media Challenge at Archers Sports Club.
The contest has a $300 cash package which comes with a floating trophy for the winners and is sponsored by Vaiton Refrigeration, a Bulawayo based company which specialises in refrigeration repair services.
The money put in by the sponsor will go towards refreshments and food after the match while the winners get to keep the trophy until it is contested for again next year.
Electronic journalists mainly drawn from the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation meet scribes from Zimpapers, Alpha Media and Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe. Since its inception in 2012, the electronic media has won all the matches and today presents the print scribes with a chance to avenge all those defeats.
Carlos Tavengwa, the Vaiton Refrigeration director said bankrolling today’s match was a small way of thanking the Bulawayo media for the magnificent role they play in society in marketing businesses operating in the city.
“This is an annual thing which started in 2012, the reason why I am sponsoring the media is because for the business to be where it is the media has played a part. The media is doing a wonderful job for the country,’’ said Tavengwa.
In a bid to bring an end to the dominance by the electronic media, the print scribes will look to the exploits of Limukani Ncube, Phineas Mukwazo, Ngqwele Dube, Simiso Siziba, Dumisani Nsingo, Fungai Muderere, Sikhumbuzo Moyo, Ricky Zililo, Sibhekisipho Fayayo, Mehluli Sibanda, Mbongeni Ncube and Sylvester Machingura.
On the electronic side, Hilton Mavise, Batsirai Shoko, Thulani Munyandi and Michael Mpofu will be key to their success.
