A youth-led organisation that emerged in response to the hardships brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic is continuing to transform lives through mental health advocacy, youth empowerment and community outreach programmes across Zimbabwe.

Founded on June 1, 2020, in Bulawayo, Ray of Hope (ROH) was established by a group of young volunteers determined to support the elderly, orphans, widows and disadvantaged youths affected by the socio-economic impact of the pandemic.

Speaking in an interview, founder Mthandazo Ncube said the organisation was inspired by the belief that everyone has a responsibility to help others.

“We were moved by the suffering we saw during the pandemic and wanted to become part of the solution. Our belief is that everyone exists for a reason, and that reason is to do good to their neighbours,” he said.

From its first visit to Entembeni Old People’s Home in October 2020, the organisation has steadily expanded its footprint through annual Christmas grocery and clothing drives, back-to-school stationery campaigns, mental health awareness programmes, anti-drug abuse initiatives, mentorship projects and winter blanket donations.

One of its flagship initiatives, Mental Health Saturdays, provides weekly online discussions and presentations that create a safe space for people to learn about mental wellbeing and access support.

Ncube said the programme has become one of the organisation’s most impactful projects because it is free and accessible to people across the country.

“Community members know they have a platform where they can learn, share their experiences and seek support without fear of stigma,” he said.

The organisation also offers free counselling services through certified peer counsellors and local pastors, assisting individuals dealing with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts while promoting positive mental health.

Ray of Hope has partnered with schools, churches, businesses, community leaders and other non-governmental organisations to reach vulnerable communities. It also works closely with children’s homes and old people’s homes, providing food, clothing, blankets, stationery and mentorship support.

Last month, in partnership with Shared Hearts Initiative, the organisation donated 10 two-ply blankets, four fleece blankets, 24 pairs of school socks, 20 woollen hats and 20 pairs of gloves to Vulindlela Children’s Home in Mpopoma.

The home, which accommodates children ranging from preschool age to high school learners, is also in urgent need of secure fencing due to the presence of three nearby bottle stores that pose a safety risk.

Despite its achievements, the organisation continues to face challenges, including limited funding, the growing drug abuse crisis among young people, overwhelming community needs and the lack of resources to establish physical counselling centres.

Ncube said Ray of Hope hopes to expand its mentorship programmes, strengthen mental health campaigns, increase school sponsorships and complete its registration process while building more partnerships with corporate organisations, foundations and community leaders.

“We envision a happy, healthy and empowered society where no one is left behind. Through collaboration and volunteerism, we believe communities can become part of the solution to the social challenges affecting our country,” he said.

The organisation is also encouraging individuals, businesses and churches to volunteer, partner or donate towards its humanitarian initiatives as it continues to extend hope to vulnerable communities across Zimbabwe.
