Referees under spotlight

Raymond Jaravaza
UNDERPERFORMING and corrupt match officials should consider themselves warned after Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa revealed that he took over the referees committee for a reason.

And it is to keep an eye on biased officiating.

Complaints have been coming too often from clubs in the round of 20 matches that have been played so far in the 2016 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

Chiyangwa will chair the referees committee deputised by Gladmore Muzambi.

The other committee members are Thabani Mkantjo, Kainos Mavhuna, Japhet Mufiri and Musa Ntonga.

He told match officials in his first meeting with them that corruption would not be tolerated.

a?If you come to stadiums with pre-conceived ideas, then you will be in trouble. You will not officiate again, let alone enter the stadium. You will only watch football from your television sets.

a?Referees are not assemblers of violence. Because you have this responsibility of managing peace and stability, you should execute your duties professionally and without bias,a? said Chiyangwa during the week.

Two weeks ago, violence erupted at Barbourfields Stadium with some dubious decisions made by referee Nkosikhona Moyo blamed for agitating supporters into throwing missiles onto the pitch, a situation that later sparked violent clashes between the police and fans.

Bosso and Chicken Inn drew 1-1 in that match.
