Robbers plead guilty

valuables in Alexandra Park yesterday appeared in court charged with armed robbery.
Michael Mutumba (42) and Goddie Kaguvi (30) pleaded guilty to three counts of armed robbery when they appeared before regional magistrate Ms Estere Chivasa.

She remanded them in custody to October 12 this year.
They were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
The first complainant is Ms Sitshengiso Penalop Machaka (50) employed by Ethiopian Airways.

The State alleges that on September 2 the pair in the company of Jeffrey Muchemwa who is on the run went to the complainant’s house in Mt Pleasant.
At around 7:45 pm they gained entry into the premises after jumping over the security wall.
They were allegedly armed with knives, stones and an axe.

While inside they met Ms Machaka’s daughter Elizabeth who was attending to a generator.
It is alleged they force-marched her into the kitchen where her sister Beatrice was doing household chores.
The trio led the two sisters to the bathroom where their mother was taking a bath.

Ms Machaka covered herself with a cloth and she was taken to her bedroom where the suspected robbers demanded cash. The State says they stole US$150, which was in her handbag and a Nokia cellphone.

It is alleged that they demanded more money and threatened to kill Elizabeth and Beatrice if she did not comply. The complainant gave them a safe key and they stole US$850, five gold rings, a necklace, a pistol and three cellphones.
On September 26 they allegedly went to Ms Alice Mufunuke’s house in Alexandra Park.

They used the same modus operandi to gain entry into her property.
They found the complainant with her daughter Anna Chigome and threatened them with a pistol before getting away with property worth US$500.

On the same day they went to Mr Malcolm Campbell’s house in the same suburb and they demanded cash from his wife Rhoda.
It is alleged that they stole jewellery, a pistol, cellphone and drove away in the couple’s Toyota Corolla.

They stole property worth US$20 000 and property worth US$17 000 was recovered.
