others are said to have completed their sentences.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau, yesterday said the criminals were released between January and February this year.
They were from Harare Remand and Chikurubi Prisons only.
“Some of them were released after they completed various sentences when they were convicted in the 90s, while others are out on bail pending appeal. Others are out on bail,” he said.
He said when released, criminals leave their addresses to prison officials so that they make follow up visits to check whether they are committing crimes or not.
Of the 89, 53 are not staying at given addresses and are believed to be staying at hideouts and safehouses, said Insp Sabau.
Insp Sabau said they were receiving cases of mostly highway robberies where criminals pose as innocent travellers.
They move in groups of between four and six and steal cars and valuables.
Some will be driving and offer lifts to travellers before robbing them along the way.
Investigations reveal that they way lay people at places and bus stops such as Fourth Street, Second Street Extension, kuMbudzi and near the Harare Exhibition Park.
Insp Sabau said the other group of robbers were targeting taxis mostly.
He said over the weekend they arrested two suspects, Fungai Wamerenga (31) and Brainmore Nyerenda (35) who were recently released from prison.
The two were previously convicted for targeting delivery vans ferrying cash and other valuables.
They were arrested after they robbed a taxi on February 17, which they used to rob US$2 500 from a Bakers Inn truck in Budiriro 3.
Insp Sabau said on Saturday at around 2.30am two armed robbers hired a taxi, a black Toyota Vitz from a night-club in Strathaven shopping centre to Warren Park.
It is alleged that near the intersection of Kirkman and Golden Quarry Roads one of the robbers grabbed the driver by the neck while the other one assaulted him at gunpoint.
They dumped the driver before driving off the vehicle heading towards the National Heroes Acre.
Investigations led to the arrest of Tendai Dzigarwi (22) and Rufaro Mahohoma (20) in Westwood while they were stripping parts from the vehicle.
Other two accomplices were arrested and Emmson Ngundu (20) fled to Zvimba.
The suspects were still in police custody yesterday and were assisting police with investigations.
The Toyota Vitz was stripped of tyres, doors, engine, headlamps and other parts which they intended to sell.
