SOUTH Africa-based Zimbabwean artist, Sandy Mudenda, is set to drop her roots reggae EP dubbed ‘Signature’ on February 28.
The five-track EP explores themes of gender-based violence, love, deceit and mental health issues.
In an interview, Sandy said the EP carries her identity as an artist.
“I wanted something that is purely mine. A true representation of who I am and I wanted to set that as a true epitome of my signature in the industry.
“I had to venture into roots reggae because there is a gap there in terms of female representation.
“Opportunities in that genre could be better as you barely see them perform and I want to take that platform and raise awareness through my music and art.
“I tackled various issues and among them is domestic violence in a track called ‘Ndewenyu’.
“Many women are normalising abuse in marriages not knowing that everyone deserves a healthy marriage and mental health is for all.”
Sandy said being a musician outside Zimbabwe has not been an easy journey.
“I feel like I’d rather be on the ground at home to really see how the music is being received and understand the way things run and improve wherever I need to.
“It’s not easy to do that over the internet as I always want Zimbabwe to be my first market,”
