Information, Communication Technologies, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Tatenda Mavetera has challenged SADC Member States to collaborate in boosting cybersecurity amidst the growing usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.

Speaking at an AI Symposium during the ongoing SADC Parliamentary Forum in Victoria Falls, Minister Mavetera acknowledged the benefits of AI and highlighted its challenges.

“Cybersecurity and disinformation are the challenges that come with AI. We need to set up robust cybersecurity measures within our countries.”

Minister Mavetera proposed the establishment of an AI governance council and annual AI review summits.

She emphasised the need for collaboration among institutions like SADC and the SADC PF.

SADC PF president, Mr Justin Muturi, said AI is inevitable, and it is up to Member States to determine the extent of its adoption.

“AI is already here, and it’s just a matter of time before parliaments adopt it in their work.”
