Tafadzwa Zimoyo in MEXICO CITY, Mexico
AS Spanish songstress Shakira sang “Waka Waka …It’s time for Africa…”, the Colombian star probably didn’t know that her 2010 FIFA World Cup theme song will apply to a Zimbabwean beauty queen.
Shakira is set to close the show at Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City on Saturday.
It appears Africa is set to win the pageant this year and with good contenders from South Africa, Somalia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Any one of these beauty queens could take the crown.
So far, on hot picks since entering bootcamp 13 days ago, Zimbabwe is tops.
Zimbabwe is represented by 27-year-old Sakhile Dube.
She has good chances of bringing the crown home. Sakhile is not new to international pageantry after she won the Supranational Top Model 2023 in Poland.
And, based on her career as a fashion and styling student in Italy, she was also trained how to walk and that itself is a bonus for the country.
Now, on fashion statement, Sakhile has engaged the services of reputable local designers like Zarguesia, Sozino and Ivhu Tribe.
These are masters of creativity, they turn heads and have worked with various beauty queens who stood out because of them.
We don’t know what Sakhile will wear at the finale.
Today is the preliminary show and she has the confidence, walk and speech and, of course, the national costume.
Her national costume, done by Ivhu Tribe (Jasper Mandizera), is about the story of Zimbabwe centering on Great Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwean Bird.
The show will see 25 girls out of 130 qualifying for the semis which will be done on Saturday.
The top 12 will be revealed and then the top 10 to the top three.
The winner will be crowned on Saturday.
There is a feeling that this is the time for Africa.
The time difference means that it will be around 4am on Sunday back home when the winner is crowned.
However, what she also needs now is the Zimbabwean vote.
