A HWEDZA man, who murdered his girlfriend after he caught her having sex in a bush, has been convicted of the crime and now awaits sentencing.
Tichaona Tarwirei was found guilty by High Court Judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi after a full trial.
Tarwirei had raised a defence of provocation, accusing his girlfriend Clara Pukayi of leading him into a state of merciless rage at Huni Village under Chief Svosve.
He argued that when he caught the two having sex, about 40 metres from his homestead, he confronted Clara demanding to know the lover who had escaped from the scene.
Tarwirei claims he pursued the man but could not find him.
When he returned, he claimed he was attacked by a brick by Clara.
He said he picked the same weapon and hit Clara at the back of her head several times.
The State proved that Tarwirei repeatedly assaulted Clara while she lay on the ground, fled the scene and left her for dead.
Clara was seen by a Good Samaritan who took her to hospital where she later died due to excessive bleeding.
Justice Mutevedzi rubbished Tarwirei’s defence saying it didn’t add up and failed to prove that he was overtaken by his emotions.
“The story simply doesn’t add up. It is patently false. We must reject it for being the lie that it is.
“In the end, we do not hesitate to hold that the evidence available discredits the accused’s claim of provocation.
“The State has, therefore, managed to prove that beyond reasonable doubt, the accused committed this murder.
“Accordingly, the accused is found guilty of murder as charged,” ruled the judge.
Tarwirei now awaits sentencing.
