A NUMBER of pre-school learners at Victory Junior School were treated to various dishes of traditional foods on Africa Day.
Many of the learners were dressed in African attire.
School director Nyasha Mukuku told H-Metro the mission was to highlight the importance of tradition, culture and mother language among the learners.
“As a pre-school, we want to catch them young and uphold their human incarnation, spirit of Ubuntu taught by our First Lady Dr Amai Mnangagwa,” said Nyasha.
“We celebrated Africa Day by taking our learners to have a taste of what we call nutritional foods.
“We allowed them to see how traditional foods are prepared, allowed them to see rukukwe, mutswi, duri, among other things.
“Children have a higher receiving capacity than elders considering that they grasp everything you teach them.
“A number of our elders only consider taking traditional foods only after being ordered by medical doctors.
“As a school, we saw it as our responsibility to uphold our First Lady’s concern and initiative in maintaining our cultural values,” said Nyasha.
She said their aim is to raise children who will have pride in their culture and mother language.
“We will engage their parents as well so as to bridge the gap that may affect the learners when they are at home.
“The current curriculum bonds teachers’ efforts with parents and guardians with a view to instill knowledge,” she said.
