Scottland’s double delight

CHAMPIONS Scottland head into today’s clash with FC Hunters at Rufaro in high spirits after a June double saw Norman Mapeza and veteran striker Knowledge Musona being named the Castle June Coach and Player of Month respectively.

Although he has previously been a serial winner of the accolade while at FC Platinum, it is the first time that Mapeza is getting the gong in his Scottland tenure.

For Musona, it is his first major honour since returning to the domestic top-flight mid-season last year. During the period under review, Mapeza led Scottland to five wins from five with his team scoring at least two goals in each game. The highlight was a 5-0 rout of Manica Diamonds at Rufaro.

Ex-Warriors skipper Musona scored five in five. He netted a brace in a 2-0 win over Hardrock and one each in the 3-1 victory against Herentals, 3-0 over Triangle, and the 5-0 demolition of Manica Diamonds.

“It feels good to be recognised by fellow coaches, captains and managers,” Mapeza said.

“We have been working hard as a team and I believe that team work attributed a lot to our fine run resulting in me and Musona winning those accolades.”

Mapeza also heaped praises on a prolific Musona, citing that his leadership qualities have been one of the major driving forces behind Scottland dominance.

The champions sit on top with 43 points in 20 games while Hardrock occupy second spot with 38 and a game in hand.

“Musona has been very influential in our run, it shows that age is just a number and we have seen it even at the ongoing World Cup that seniors have been defying the odds.

“Musona has been giving us a lot as a club and his hardwork, discipline and commitment is unmatched.

“He is a very good example for the emerging young players. My wish is that he stays healthy and injury free throughout the season,” added Mapeza.

This afternoon they face a seemingly revived Hunters who sit in 14th position with 20 points, just four above the drop-zone.

However, they are unbeaten in their last four games with their highlight being a 3-1 victory over Bulawayo Chiefs and a 2-1 win against Simba Bhora.

Mapeza acknowledges Hunters’ resurgence, and how they can be a threat to their fine run.

“Playing Hunters will not be easy because if you look at their latest games they have been doing well,” Mapeza said.

“Winning against Simba at home and then collecting a point away to FC Platinum tells a lot about what they can do.

“Second half of the season I think they are actually a team to watch out for, so we have to be in our best shape today.

“The second half of the season is all about mental strength, games will be very difficult because each side will be pushing for different objectives so we should avoid faltering at all costs.”

Scottland are likely to be without the seasoned Godknows Murwira, who reportedly joined Hunters on loan when the transfer window opened on July 1.
