‘She left me because of poverty’

AN ODZI-based cobbler refused to part with any money as maintenance for his child saying his ex-wife had ditched him because of poverty.David Murangwa and Lorraine Makadzange appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mrs Annie Ndiraya last Thursday, with the latter claiming $60 as maintenance for one minor child.

Makadzange said: “This man kicked me out of our matrimonial home without giving me a tangible reason. I am claiming $60 maintenance to cater for our child’s welfare.

“If he really cared about us, he should have explained to me what was happening.  After all this, I tried to reach out to him, but he could not allow me back saying all sorts of bad things to me.

“I tried reaching out to his family, but they could not even talk to me. I am into buying and selling, so the money I am making is not enough for both my child and me.”

Murangwa had no kind words for his former wife, saying she was being cruel to him.

“I am offering nothing for this child because she took away my only source of income.  I am a cobbler and as we speak she left my place with the tools of my trade. For that reason, I have not been making any money and if am to give her something, it will be a maximum of $10.

“This woman ditched me because of poverty. We were struggling to make ends meet, so she left for greener pastures. All she is doing is to get back at me, but it is not my fault nor is it by choice to be in such a mess. She expected more than I could provide,” he argued.

Mrs Ndiraya ordered Murangwa to pay $20 as maintenance with effect from February 28.
