‘She threatens to scald me with cooking oil’

HAVING had enough of the assaults and suffering from her husband, a Mutare woman approached the civil courts praying for protection.

Merfin Mundapeyi appeared before Mrs Anniah Ndiraya praying for protection from her ex-husband, Justin Chabuda.

Mundapeyi told the court that her husband was a thorn in her flesh because she emotionally and physically abused her.

She said: “On Christmas Day, my in-laws called and informed him that we should travel to Bulawayo, but he never told me. His mother later called me telling me that I was also supposed to come and she sent me money for bus fare. When he realised that I had followed him to Bulawayo he assaulted me in the presence of his relatives saying I was supposed to be in Mutare.

“I have suffered enough at his hands. This is the time for the court to protect me. When I asked for money he refused to give me, forcing me to borrow from friends. He accused me of having goblins that will cause his death if he comes home. He has been away from home for two and half years. He always assaults me whenever we meet.”

“He is now my ex-husband because he came with his father and paid my parents a $5 divorce token.”

Chabuda disputed ever being violent to his wife.

Chabuda said: “I tried to solve our marital dispute amicably, but it has failed. She also visits any place she desires without informing me. When I asked her she becomes violent and assaulted me. I have this scar on my forehead from one of her attacks.

“Last week we decided to part ways because she was threatening to scald me with cooking oil. Divorcing her informally shows that I still respect her. I don’t dispute that the order be granted because I was also suffering.”

Presiding over the matter, Mrs Anniah Ndiraya granted the order in favour of Mundapeyi and ordered both parties to maintain peace towards each other.
