THERE was shock across the country yesterday after prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo, and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, died in a helicopter crash.
The couple died when a helicopter they were travelling in crashed near Waddilove Mission in Marondera.
Four other people, who were in the same helicopter, also died after the plane went down at around 5pm.
Family spokesperson, Dr Hebba Chivayo, confirmed the 43-year-old businessman’s death.
“Yes, we confirm that Wicknell Chivayo and his wife have perished in this tragedy. I am told the helicopter had five occupants.
“The other three were the two pilots and Mr Chivayo’s aide. “The bodies are still here at the scene. Some are burnt.”
Dr Chivayo, said they had spent the day with Wicknell and his wife at their rural home in Gandami where he was checking on the construction progress of his home.
“We departed at around 4:20pm. We drove to Marondera, while they travelled by helicopter.
“When we arrived in Marondera, I received a call informing me that there had been a plane crash and we immediately rushed to the scene.
“This is a hard moment for us,” said Dr Chivayo.
The cause of the crash was still unknown by the time of going to print.
Government also confirmed that there were no survivors in the crash.
The tragic accident has sent shockwaves across the country, with police and emergency services rushing to the scene.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the crash last night.
“The ZRP confirms a plane crash in Marondera Rural area at 5pm this evening (last night).
“The aircraft had six occupants. More details will be released in due course as the scene is currently being attended,” Comm Nyathi said.
However, he said it was still too early to identify the victims as some next of kin had not yet been informed.
Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Nick Mangwana also confirmed the fatal crash.
“The Government wishes to confirm that a helicopter crash has occurred, involving one high-profile businessman, four passengers, and two pilots.
“Current information indicates that there were no survivors in this crash.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will confirm the names of the victims in due course.
“We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the victims, their families, and their friends during this difficult time,” said Mangwana.
Emergency teams worked at the crash site last night as authorities began investigations into the cause of the accident.
Chivayo and Lulu tied the knot in a lavish wedding that attracted widespread public attention last year.

The businessman’s death comes just a day after Chimurenga music legend Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo arrived in Harare for two special shows.
Mukanya sealed a US$1 million deal with Chivayo in which the musician was set to play at the businessman’s 44th birthday celebrations in November and Jah Prayzah’s wedding.
