SIKANDAR Raza says representing Zimbabwe remains the highest honour of his career after reaffirming his commitment to national duty despite the growing demands and financial rewards of global franchise cricket.
The experienced all-rounder, who missed Zimbabwe’s historic Test series triumph over Bangladesh, has returned to the Chevrons set-up ahead of the ODI series, which begins today.
Raza’s availability provides a major boost to the Chevrons’ white-ball squad as they seek to build on the momentum from their Test success.
The 40-year-old, who has been one of the most sought-after Zimbabwean players on the global franchise circuit, revealed he made a commitment that he would always make himself available for white-ball assignments while managing his Test workload because of his packed schedule.
“I hold my international commitments, especially with Zimbabwe, very high,” said Raza. I made a promise that I will not miss a white-ball game. When it comes to Test cricket, I will play whatever fixtures we have, but probably half of them because it will be very difficult for me to play eight to 10 Test matches, or even six Tests in a year.”
Raza said the Test success in his absence last week was a proud moment.
“To see the team win without me makes me happy as well,” he said.
“But since I made that promise with Zimbabwe Cricket and the fans that I will not miss a white-ball game, as much as it is sad to miss some opportunities, I am actually happy that I am going to represent my country.
“For me, that is the ultimate honour.”
Zimbabwe will be hoping Raza’s experience, leadership and all-round ability can inspire them as they shift focus to the ODI series.
