THE JESUIT Refugee Service in Zimbabwe will from next month be offering vocational training courses at its complex at Tongogara Refugee Camp. The courses will be offered to refugees aged between 18 and 60 years and will be open to both males and females. They will be offered for free.
JRS project coordinator Ms Tendai Makoni confirmed the development and said courses would be offered in Dressmaking, Computer Skills, Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Carpentry.
“We will be offering the above mentioned courses to all interested refugees at Tongogara Refugee Camp. Our organisation was touched by the plight of refugees staying at Tongogara and we had to get clearance from the Commissioner for Refugees and United Nations High Commission for Refugees to assist the refugees with technical skills. On average, we will train 340 refugees starting from the age of 18.
“We have engaged the services of tutors from the refugee community who acquired the skills in their home countries. After completion of the courses, successful students will receive certificates,” she said.
Jesuit Refugees Service in Zimbabwe is a Catholic organisation operating under Jesuit priests.
It has been operating in Zimbabwe for the past 18 years since 1996, with the mission serving, advocating and accompanying refugees, asylum seekers and forcibly displaced people.
