SMUGGLING 11 bales of second-hand clothes earned a Dangamvura man a $200 fine last week.
Jairos Ziyera (40) was convicted on his own guilty plea when he appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura.
It was the State’s case led by Mr Douglas Mutiure that on June 22, Ziyera was found in possession of 11 bales of second-hand clothes loaded in his car by police officers patrolling the border area with Mozambique.
Ziyera tried to escape, but was arrested.
Ziyera pleaded guilty, but argued that he had just been hired to transport the smuggled bales.
“I do admit that I was found in possession of the 11 bales of second-hand clothes, but there were not mine.
“I was only hired, but was caught in the crossfire after the people who had hired me fled from the scene as soon the police blocked my way,” said Ziyera
However, Mrs Chiundura told him that it was a crime to be involved in illegal activities whether he was hired or not.
