Sobukhazi High Sschool paused regular lessons on Wednesday for a special assembly celebrating some of its standout athletes — a moment of recognition designed to inspire the next generation through stories of hard work, talent, and achievement.
The school honoured learners who have excelled in athletics, netball, and javelin on both national and regional stages. The aim was not only to celebrate medals but also to allow learners to share their journeys and motivate their peers.
“You can’t sit on your talent” was the message echoed throughout the event, encouraging learners to embrace both academics and sport.
Among the honourees was 19-year-old Methembe Tshuma, fresh from winning a silver medal at the African Southern Region Athletics competition in Harare and a bronze at the African Junior Championships in Nigeria. Tshuma, who previously competed at the Region V Games in Namibia, remains one of Sobukhazi’s brightest prospects. He is now preparing to represent Zimbabwe at the upcoming Cossasa Games.
“It’s really an honour to be appreciated by the school in this way,” said Tshuma. “It is my hope that this goes on to inspire some of my schoolmates. It also pushes me to do more.”
Another standout was Rutendo Gamana, a 17-year-old double threat in javelin and netball. She clinched gold at the Nash Nationals and has earned her place in Team Zimbabwe for the Cossasa Youth Games in Eswatini. Gamana also features in the national age-group netball squad, playing as a wing attacker.
“I am happy with these achievements. I hope to continue doing well in the field of sport,” she said.
Also honoured was Precious Sibanda, a 17-year-old goal defender who starred at the Region V Games and is set to feature at Cossasa. Nomselo Ncube, a goal attacker with a strong record in national competitions, was recognised for her continued rise, while Kelly Sibanda, another goal attacker, beamed with pride about her upcoming Cossasa debut.
“I am so excited for this achievement,” said Kelly. “Sport can open doors. I’d like to encourage others to take it seriously because it can change your life.”
Team achievements were also celebrated. The school’s Under-20 girls’ netball team was applauded for their bronze finish at the 2025 Nash finals, while the Under-17s were recognised for their strong performance at this year’s national finals in Tsholotsho.
Adding to the occasion, Bakers Inn rewarded the athletes with gift packs. Company marketing officer Lashier Ncube said:
“As sponsors, we are happy when these athletes succeed. Baker’s Inn is committed to supporting school sports, and it’s rewarding to see young talent being nurtured and recognised.”
The event concluded with words of encouragement from school officials, reminding learners that commitment to sport and education opens possibilities far beyond the classroom.
Athletics coach Zenzele Ngwenya praised the discipline and drive shown by the learners:
“These young athletes have shown that discipline, sacrifice, and passion can open doors far beyond the classroom.
We don’t just train for medals — we train to build character and resilience. What they’ve achieved is only the beginning, and I believe many more will follow if they continue with the same spirit.”
