Zimbabwe Softball Association president, Stonard Mapfumo, said this will be the selection platform for athletes who want to participate at the Under-19 World Cup tournament in South Africa. That tournament will bring together 16 countries from all over the world.
“The age group at the Nash tournament is the same qualifying age for the World Cup competitions, therefore every player will want to go and participate.
“This in turn should raise the level of competition at our games to be held in Mutare. There will only be us, Botswana and South Africa representing Africa, therefore it is a chance of a lifetime for our players to hold their own at this prestigious tournament and make history,” Mapfumo said.
The local competition will see teams from Mutare, Harare, Mashonaland West, Midlands and Bulawayo battling for honours.
While Mashonaland East are yet to confirm their participation, Mashonaland Central will not be taking part.
“Schools have been our base in the professional league and this should be used continually for identifying talent,” said Mapfumo.
