A BULAWAYO-BASED soldier allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife by punching her with fists and kicking her several times on the stomach after she refused to go to his rural home, where he wanted her to give birth.

Xavier Kwenda (26) attacked his wife, Sharai Mupombwa (23), after she refused to go to his rural home in Mutare.
Mupombwa was referred to Mpilo Central Hospital where she is still admitted.

Kwenda reportedly ordered his wife to go to the village so that she would deliver there.

This was revealed when Kwenda, from Pumula suburb, appeared before provincial magistrate Mr Willard Maphios Moyo facing charges of physical abuse.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded out of custody to 12 May on $100 bail.

Prosecuting, Mr Mufaro Mageza told the court that on Saturday, at around 8am, Kwenda ordered his wife to go to his rural home in Mutare.

“Mupombwa refused to go, angering Kwenda who started punching her on the head. He went on to kick her on the stomach knowing that she was pregnant,” said Mr Mageza.

He said the matter was reported to the police leading to Kwenda’s arrest.
