A MISERABLE silence hung over Highlanders offices on Friday as grief replaced the usual bustle, with government officials, football administrators, politicians and members of the Bosso family converging to mourn the tragic loss of club chairman and Premier Soccer League (PSL) vice-chairman Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Sifiso Siziba and treasurer Nkani Khoza.
The three senior Highlanders officials were killed in a road traffic accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Road on Thursday night, a tragedy that has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwean football and cast a dark shadow over the club’s centenary year.
With emotions still raw, the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, alongside the ruling party, Zanu-PF confirmed that it had formally initiated a request for the trio to be accorded State-assisted funerals, saying their selfless service to football warranted national recognition.
The announcement was made at the Highlanders clubhouse in the presence of Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Professor Mthuli Ncube, Zifa vice-president Kennedy Ndebele, Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial leadership and the Highlanders board led by chairman Luke Mnkandla.
