THE inaugural Mutare Spinfest will be on tomorrow (Saturday) at Raylton Club with Harare spinners expected to grace the event. The Spinfest comes after the burnouts proved popular last month drawing scores of people at the club. Spinning is an extreme entertainment sport usually orchestrated in a safely barricaded area. The idea in burnouts is to keep the vehicle stationary while spinning its wheels, causing the tyres to heat up and smoke due to friction.
Although burnouts were mostly common in South Africa, the adrenalin-rush sport is fast growing in popularity in the country and now expanding beyond Harare. The Mutare Spinfest which is being hosted by the uptown nightclub, BarCode is expected to become an annual event.
BarCode spokesperson, Brian ‘DJ Stylez’ Mavhiza, said prominent Harare spinners from the Ice Motors Crew Cici Boy, Jadha, Boss Ice, Shy and Gazza General are expected to grace the event as well as local spinners. “After seeing how popular the burnouts were, we decided to host our own Spinfest just like the recently held Harare Spinfest.
“The sport is growing in popularity in the country and we want local revellers to enjoy the same entertainment provided in Harare. The event will start at 12pm till late,” said DJ Stylez.
He added that tonight (Friday) an all-white party to host the Harare spinners will be at BarCode.
“The pre-burnouts white party is meant to show our guests that Mutare also has a touch of class just like how it is done in Harare. Burnouts are associated with colour themes and dress up events and we hope local revellers will complement this and dress up for the occasion at the all-white party tonight,” he said.
Resident DJs Stylez and Cesh will be on the decks as usual and to spice up the evening DJ Ash, Mutare’s own budding female DJ will also perform. The pimped-up BMWs usually used in the burnouts are mostly the 320 and 325i models because of the agility of the box shaped, rear wheel drive models in stunt drives.
Spinners are expected to exude their skills on the wheels in manoeuvres of spinning 180 and 360 turns as well as the doughnut.
A doughnut is a manoeuvre that entails rotating the rear or front of the vehicle around the opposite set of wheels in a continuous motion, creating a circular skid-mark pattern while emitting a lot of smoke from the friction. The tricky stunt where the driver doing a burnout jumps out of the car and back in is usually the major highlight which often entertains crowds.
The contest is judged on crowd response, with style and attitude being important factors to win crowds over.
