SOUTH AFRICAN gospel powerhouse Spirit of Praise (SOP), is set to electrify Bulawayo this weekend, marking its third appearance in the city in just two years as part of the group’s acclaimed Next Level Tour. The highly anticipated concert, scheduled for November 30, is expected to draw massive crowds as the city ushers in the festive season.

The star-studded line-up features some of SOP’s most celebrated voices, including Imimoya hit-maker Ayanda Ntanzi, Dumi Mkokstad, Lufuno Dagada, Mpumi Mtsweni, Omega Khunou, Sindi Ntombela, Xola Toto and veteran vocalist, Zaza Mokhethi. Zimbabwean gospel sensations Everton Mlalazi and Canaan Nyathi — now regular collaborators with SOP — will also grace the stage.

Adding prestige to the event will be Pastor Mthunzi Namba, widely regarded as one of the architects behind Joyous Celebration, who will attend as guest of honour. Popular media personality Mbo Mahocs is expected to host the show.

Mlalazi, fresh from a successful tour in Australia, said performing in Bulawayo holds deep personal significance. Originally from Tsholotsho, he described returning home with SOP as a special moment.

“There’s nothing as sweet as coming home. No matter where you go around the world ministering the Lord’s work, coming home is always exciting because this is where you belong. We’ve been to different places in Africa and Europe, but just like me, SOP has connected very well with Bulawayo. That’s why we’re bringing the Next Level Tour koNtuthu Ziyathunqa. I’m looking forward to a great night,” said the Ngeke Kulunge hit-maker.

Fellow Zimbabwe-born vocalist Canaan Nyathi, now based in South Africa, echoed the sentiment, describing SOP’s Zimbabwean audience as one of the most passionate on the continent.

“It’s a good feeling to be returning home to Bulawayo with SOP. The group is loved across Africa and in neighbouring countries like Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique. But every time we visit Zimbabwe, the connection is always mutual. The crew has definitely adopted the country as its second home,” said Nyathi.
Durban-bred singer Ayanda Ntanzi of Imimoya fame, who last performed in Bulawayo at the 2024 Bulawayo Gospel Festival, said he is thrilled to return.

“Bulawayo is one of my favourite places to perform because the first time I came here, I felt welcomed and connected very well with the people. I was surprised to meet people who speak my Zulu language. When I heard them talk, I felt at home as I related to most of them.
“I can basically say Bulawayo is home, and I’m proud to be returning with SOP to such a beautiful and welcoming city. I’m looking forward to a great time on stage as we spread the word of God through praise and worship,” said Ntanzi.

Thulani Mkokstad, manager to Dumi Mkokstad, said fans can expect an electrifying performance.
“Dumi is fresh from releasing a live project that includes his latest hit Lingevinjwe, which is loved by fans worldwide, including in Zimbabwe. He’s gradually becoming a regular in Bulawayo as he connects well with his audience. Returning with Spirit of Praise, Dumi is looking forward to an epic performance and may perform Lingevinjwe, giving fans a chance to hear it live for the first time,” said Mkokstad.

SOP continues to enjoy a strong following in Zimbabwe, thanks in part to its incorporation of Ndebele and Shona influences into its music — a cultural blend that has deepened its bond with local audiences.
