THE heavy rains received in all parts of Manicaland left a trail of destruction in Nyanga where the roof of classroom blocks at Nyafaro High School were blown off, while some timber plantations were also destroyed.
Nyanga District Development Coordinator Mr Nyashadzashe Zindowe told The Manica Post that some roads in the district are now impassable.
“There was extensive damage of classroom blocks at Nyafaro High School in the Tangwena area where the roof was blown off. Some roads like at Troutbeck Resort were impassable after fallen trees had blocked the road. We managed to clear that road after getting assistance from Dongo Sawmills,” he said.
Allied Timbers spokesperson, Ms Veronica Gutu also confirmed the destruction of plantations.
“I have heard that there has been extensive destruction of trees in our plantations. I am yet to get the finer details of the extent of the destruction,” said Ms Gutu.
Dongo Sawmills owner, Mr Francis Dongo weighed in saying: “The damage in plantations is extensive. Most players in the industry will be left counting their losses. Some pine and gum trees were uprooted, while others fell because of the strong wind.”
Meanwhile, the Chipinge District Civil Protection Committee today activated its committees and systems in anticipation of floods that may be caused by the heavy rains.

They also set up evacuation centres in all wards.
Low lying areas of the district such as Chisumbanje and Middle Sabi areas received continuous rains for the greater part of the day, while heavy downpours were recorded in areas like Ndiyadzo, Mt Selinda and Chipinge town.
Assistant District Development Coordinator, Mr Tedious Beto, said: “We are calling upon all Government departments with vehicles to be on standby as their vehicles can be deployed to affected areas anytime.
“We have identified evacuation centres such as schools. So far no major damage has been recorded. We are, however, urging the public to be on high alert.”
Chipinge District Meteorological officer, Mrs Lydia Masengu said they expect the rains to continue until Thursday.
