A Masvingo General Hospital employee allegedly committed suicide by drinking a pesticide on Monday, a few days after blowing a $3,000 loan that he had secured from a bank.
Godfrey Musiiwa, 29, of Rujeko and a general hand at the referral provincial hospital allegedly went on a beer drinking spree soon after securing the loan.
Godwin Musiiwa, a relative, rushed him to the hospital at around 10PM after he found him writhing in pain in his room.
Sources said Godfrey had on countless occasions attempted to take his life over debts that had accumulated to thousands of dollars.
One said Musiiwa had become pensive and had of late isolated himself from his friends.
“Musiiwa informed me that he had successfully applied for a loan and was intending to buy a car. However, we didn’t see the car apart from seeing him drunk most of the time,” said a workmate who asked not to be named.
A neighbour, Loveness Moyo who comes from the same rural area with Musiiwa said he was a chronic borrower who never paid debts.
“On the day he committed suicide, he had a misunderstanding with a neighbour over a debt and the misunderstanding nearly degenerated into a fight. I’m told he squandered a loan of $3,000 that he had secured from the bank,” said Moyo.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the incident.
She referred further questions to national spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, who could not be reached for comment.
A pastor with Alliance church, Munyaradzi Chidarikire, urged members of the public to seek professional counselling when confronted with problems.
“I urge members of the public to seek counselling from professional counsellors or pastors. They can also get assistance from the police and relatives,” said Chidarikire.
