MISS World Zimbabwe Annie-Grace Mutambu is back home from the Miss World finals proud that her beauty with a purpose project was named in the top 10.
Miss Spain Mireia Lalaguna Royo was crowned Miss World at a colourful ceremony in China on December 19, beating 113 other contestants.
Mutambu, 19, who returned from China on Monday, said proper preparation was the key of making it to the top 10.
“I’m happy that my project made it into the top 10 in the competition. This shows our message had impact and we showed how people with albinism lived and how we helped them. I believe the ample time I spent preparing and getting things together helped me in the end,” said Mutambu.
She said at first she did not know anything about albinism which was a challenge for her finding help for them.
“Working on the project wasn’t that easy because I didn’t know anything about albinism. I was only helped by a church colleague who directed me to work with Albino Charity Organisation of Zimbabwe. I started to research and put together footage highlighting their plight. Those who want to watch it can go onto YouTube,” said Mutambu.
She said her stay in China was a great experience as she learnt a lot from other contestants.
“I was friends with my roommate Miss Zambia and Miss Uganda who was across the hall. They’ve a lot of dreams to improve the lives of the less privileged in their countries like I do,” said Mutambu.
She said she was now going to concentrate on her studies.
“I was doing ACCA from home and that’s what I’ll go back to for now. However I won’t leave working with people living with the condition of albinism. I believe a lot has to be done for them to alleviate their lives,” said Mutambu.
Miss Zimbabwe Trust spokesperson Tendai Chirau said they were proud of Mutambu although she did not win the competition.
“Though she didn’t win, her beauty with a purpose project was shortlisted in the top 10 out of the 114 projects presented. The project was focusing on albinos,” said Chirau.
