Sungura artist dreams big

Sungura musician, David “Nyundo” Kagoza, says upcoming artists were not rising due to numerous challenges.

In an interview with H-Metro, Nyundo said he has been in the industry for some time and has come across a number of hurdles.

“Challenges are there in the music industry for upcoming artists, the biggest being lack of funds for marketing and purchasing musical instruments.

“Also, when you are still upcoming, it is not easy to retain band members so you end up losing members because you cannot afford to pay them enough.

“There is also the issue of recording expenses and the need for sound management too,” he said.

Despite facing hardships, he was pleased with the support benefactors were giving him.

“I recently released a single called Mwanasikana. I have been amazed with the support, and acceptance of my music, by the people in general and fellow musicians as well.

“It is so wonderful to note that a lot of people appreciate my music,” Nyundo said.

His passion for singing started when he was still a little boy.

“I started singing long back when I was still in Grade Three, when I was chosen to join the school choir, after my teacher realised how passionate I was about music.

“When I was done with high school in 1992, I joined a band called The Iron Rods, which was based in Mutare.

“In 1993, I then moved to Harare to look for a job since my parents were against my wishes to be a singer and I ended up joining Tapson Mudimu and The Rising Spirits and we recorded two albums.

“I was a backing vocalist in this band,” he told H-Metro.

“My mother, Rudia Chibharo-Mudzudza, is a very good vocalist and my father Jairos Kagoza (the late) was very good at playing the drums,” he said.

“When the Rising Spirits disbanded, around 2003 or 2004, I started thinking of doing my own projects.

“I managed to record my first album in 2012, with the help of Innocent Mujintu, Mike Maikoro, who is now working with Baba Sharo, and Comfort, who is now working with First Farai.”
