AS climate change intensifies across Southern Africa, Zimbabwe is increasingly turning to sustainable engineering solutions to bolster resilience, reduce emissions, and safeguard livelihoods.
With recurrent droughts, erratic rainfall, and extreme heat events disrupting agriculture, energy, and water systems, the nation is integrating innovation, policy, and community action to build a more climate-resilient future.
Zimbabwe’s climate challenges are both stark and accelerating. According to the
Zimbabwe Meteorological Services Department, average temperatures have risen by 1.3°C since 1900,faster than the global average. The country faces prolonged dry spells, diminished water availability, and more frequent cyclones ineastern regions. In 2019, Cyclone Idai left a trail of destruction across Chimanimani nd Chipinge, displacing thousands and exposing critical infrastructure vulnerabilities.
These impacts are not just environmental,they are deeply socio-economic.
Agriculture, which employs over 60% of the population and contributes nearly 18% to GDP, is especially sensitive to climate variability. Power outages due to low water levels at Kariba Dam,the country’s largest hydro power source,have further strained industrial productivity and daily life.
In response, Zimbabwean engineers, researchers, and policymakers are pioneering sustainable engineering approaches that align with global net-zero ambitions while addressing local realities.
One promising area is renewable energy integration. The country has abundant solar potential, with an average solar irradiation of 5,5 kWh/m²/day. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA), under the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, has deployed solar mini-grids in over 200 schools and clinics since 2020. Engineers are also exploring hybrid systems that combine solar PV with battery storage to ensure reliability in off-grid and peri-urban settlements.
Simultaneously, sustainable urban design is gaining traction. In Harare and Bulawayo, pilot projects are testing green roofs and permeable pavements to manage urban flooding and reduce the urban heat island effect.
These nature-based solutions, supported by local universities and international partners, demonstrate how low-cost, eco-engineering can enhance climate adaptation in dense informal settlements.
Building energy efficiency is another frontier. The Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) has developed draft guidelines for energy-efficient building envelopes and passive cooling techniques suited to the local climate. While adoption remains voluntary, advocacy groups and professional bodies,including the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers,are pushing for mandatory green building codes in public infrastructure.
The Zimbabwean Government has not remained idle. The National Climate Policy (2020) and the updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement outline a clear commitment to low-carbon, climate-resilient development.
The NDC targets a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, conditional on international support.
Key initiatives include the National Renewable Energy Policy (2019), which aims to increase the share of renewables in the national energy mix to 1,100 MW by 2030.
To attract investment, the Government has introduced tax incentives for solar equipment imports and streamlined licensing for independent power producers.
Moreover, the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry has established a Climate Change Unit to coordinate cross-sectoral action. It recently launched the “Climate-Smart Agriculture” programme, promoting drought- tolerant crops, conservation agriculture, and solar-powered irrigation,blending agronomic knowledge with engineering innovation.
Zimbabwe is also engaging in regional and global climate finance mechanisms.
Through the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund, the country has accessed resources for projects like the “Strengthening Climate Resilience of Agricultural Livelihoods in Agro-Ecological Regions I and II,” which integrates weather forecasting, water harvesting infrastructure, and community-based early warning systems.
Beyond state action, grassroots and academic institutions are playing vital roles.
The University of Zimbabwe’s Department of Civil Engineering has launched research on biochar-enhanced construction materials and rainwater harvesting systems tailored for communal areas. Meanwhile, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) is piloting a solar-powered desalination unit for saline groundwater in Matabeleland,a region plagued by chronic water scarcity.
Community-led initiatives are equally impactful. In Mutare, local cooperatives have installed biogas digesters using organic waste to generate cooking fuel, reducing deforestation and indoor air pollution. In Masvingo, women’s groups are building sand dams and contour ridges using traditional knowledge combined with modern hydrological modelling.
Looking ahead, Zimbabwe’s urban centers could become testbeds for integrated climate solutions. Concepts like net-zero carbon cities,combining rooftop solar, green infrastructure, and smart grids,are no longer distant ideals but emerging possibilities.
With support from international research collaborations, such as those under the UCL-led TREES Doctoral Landscape Award programme, Zimbabwean scholars are contributing novel models for photovoltaic-green roof systems tailored to African cities.
As a nation historically rich in natural resources and human ingenuity, Zimbabwe stands at a pivotal moment. Climate change is not merely a threat,it is a catalyst for reimagining development through the lens of sustainability, equity, and innovation.
Through concerted engineering efforts, supportive policies, and community engagement, Zimbabwe is laying the groundwork for a future where resilience is built into every brick, beam, and policy document.
In the words of environmental engineer and educator Dr Thandiwe Nkomo, “We cannot stop the rain or the drought, but we can design our world to dance with the climate,not be destroyed by it.” In Zimbabwe, that dance has already began.
