LAST week, we explored common mistakes learners make during examinations and how to avoid them.
This week, we shift the spotlight to a deeper truth. Academic excellence is not only about passing exams but taking charge of your own learning.
Parents desire good grades and academic growth more than anything else, but the responsibility rests squarely on the learner. Success is not accidental — it is cultivated through discipline, attitude and deliberate effort.
Attitude
Attitude is the foundation of learning.
Imagine a vehicle with a flat tyre — it cannot move until the tyre is fixed. In the same way, a negative attitude towards study and learning stalls progress.
Learners must replace doubt and laziness with determination and curiosity. Without the right mindset, no amount of teaching will carry you forward.
Procrastination
Procrastination is the silent thief of success.
Delaying study or postponing asking for help only compounds confusion.
Learners should never shy away from questions for fear of appearing foolish.
It is better to ask and be guided than to remain silent and struggle.
Teachers are at your service — use them.
Never allow a teacher to proceed to the next concept before you have mastered the previous one.
Recap lessons; summarise them in your own words and demonstrate understanding.
Volunteer for class presentations; preparing to share ideas forces you to research and gives you an edge.
Beyond homework
Do not wait for teachers to assign homework. Seek it out.
Consult recommended sources in the library, read widely and summarise what you grasp in a notebook.
Past papers are invaluable — discuss them with friends and learn different approaches to tackling questions.
Learning is not a solitary journey.
Form study groups, create timetables and help peers who are struggling.
Teaching others reinforces your own understanding.
Remember, teachers are facilitators in the 21st century, but learners must drive their own progress.
Communicate challenges early
Do not wait until performance drops before raising concerns.
A stitch in time saves nine. Be punctual for lessons and if problems at home affect concentration, seek help from teachers or school authorities. Silence only deepens the struggle.
You are the average of the five people you spend most time with.
Surround yourself with friends who add value, not those who drag you into indiscipline, laziness or distractions such as backchatting and premature relationships.
Focused learners become role models in class and beyond.
Balancing academics and activities
Sports and cultural activities enrich school life, but academics must take precedence.
Balance your time wisely so that extracurricular pursuits do not compromise your grades.
Academic excellence is a journey of a thousand miles that begins with a single step.
Learners must take charge, cultivate discipline and embrace responsibility.
Teachers can guide, parents can encourage, but ultimately, success depends on the learner’s own effort and choices.
Until next time, all the best in your academics.
