Takunda speaks through music

Music is an art, it leads itself to an alliance with words as in song and with physical movement as in dance.

Throughout the history music has been an important adjunct to ritual and drama, has been credited with the capacity to reflect and influence human emotion.

Music feeds the mind and thus fuels people’s creativity.

A creative mind has the ability to make discoveries and creation of innovations.

Listening to instrumentals of music challenges one to listen and tell a story about what one hears.

In the same sense, playing a musical instrument gives one the ability to tell a story without words.

Both require maximum right brain usage which not only exercises one’s creativity but rather intellectual ability.

Takunda Kurinyepa, a 22-year-old student at Chinhoyi University of Technology, speaks through music.

The young talented musician started music at a tender age when he was in high school.

Takunda is a diverse young artist who refuses to be identified with just one genre.

He believes that art is a versatile and should therefore be expressed as such.

“Music transcends all boundaries of communication because one can speak and tell stories to someone, on the other side of the planet even though you do not speak the same language.

“Music as an art is important for one to have an open mind in order to be in touch with that sense of understanding” Takunda said.

Having being passionate about music from a young age, Takunda’s  first recording was in 2021, an Afro pop track called “Temptations” followed by a deep house jam titled “Ndasarudza Iwe” which garnered airplay on Trace Africa.

His latest release, Afrobeat song called “Vaima”, a soulful prayer for better days is topping chats on Trace Gospel.

The diverse young artiste draws inspiration from different sources ranging from personal experiences to the life around him.

“Many people immediately push away certain styles of music without having explored what it has to offer. Not all the styles will appear or resonate with a person, but one may discover a new part of yourself when you are open to all the possibilities” he added.

Financial constraints are making it difficult for the young musician to release an album earlier but he is looking forward to drop one before the year ends.

Takunda has been performing at events organised by Moonchild District as well as at the Chinhoyi University of Technology.

The greatest wish is for his music to become internationally recognised so that his message is widely received. When that happens, he plans to give back to the community by uplifting other talented artistes in Zimbabwe.
