Abel Ndooka in Mutare
BLACK Rhinos Athletics Club runner Moses Tarakinyu made history on Sunday, winning his third consecutive Tanganda Half Marathon 21km title in Mutare.
Tarakinyu crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 13 seconds, ahead of Kenyan Isaac Kiplagaat, who came second, and Godwin Katakura, who settled for third.
An emotional Tarakinyu credited his club for the support that helped carry him through yet another title-winning performance.
“I’m very happy to win my third consecutive Tanganda Half Marathon 21km crown.
“It’s not easy to come here and win because there are so many good athletes competing. I want to thank my club, Black Rhinos, and my commanders for always supporting me as I prepare for these races.
“I also want to acknowledge my fellow athletes who ran today, and everyone who won in other categories — congratulations to them,” he said.
In the women’s 21km race, Fortunate Chidzira took top honours ahead of Caroline Mhandu, the 2023 champion, while Miriam Sibanda came third.
Both Tarakinyu and Chidzira walked away with US$800 each in prize money.
In the 10km events, rising star Wayne Kabondo clinched the men’s title, while Melody Kaseke won the women’s race.
Wheelchair athlete Stellah Jongwe continued her dominance in the women’s 21km category, while Ratidzo Tom won the women’s 10km wheelchair race. Previous Wiri claimed victory in the men’s 10km wheelchair division.
