A TAXI driver was left for dead after a regular customer turned against him and teamed up with a gang of robbers, who assaulted him and stole his car.
The driver Shepherd Mangwiza was rescued by a good Samaritan who saw him lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
The suspect is 18-year-old Takudzwa Nyika who appeared before magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa charged with robbery of a motor vehicle.
Allegations are that on July 23, Mangwiza was approached by Nyika whom he knew from previous hirings, who indicated to him that he was looking for a car for hire to carry his sisters from Sugar Mountain near Family 24 along Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The sisters were said to be at a prayer session.
They agreed on a fare of US$7 and Mangwiza took Nyika to the said mountain and when they got to the base of the mountain, Nyika allegedly told him to wait for him as he was going up to get his sisters.
Instead, Nyika came back in the company of his accomplices, nine men, who were armed with axes, machetes, catapults, and knives, and attacked Mangwiza.
Mangwiza was allegedly hit three times on the head with an axe, once on the chin with a machete, once on the mouth, and once on both hands with an axe.
Nyika fell unconscious and he was dragged out of the vehicle, thrown on the ground, and left for dead.
The gang got into the car and drove off with his phone.
A few hours later, Mangwiza was assisted by a passerby who called the police and was subsequently taken to the hospital.
Mangwiza was admitted for a month.
On September 1, Mangwiza received information from his relative in Goromonzi that his car was being used by Nyika and they approached police.
