Teachers urged to invest

THE Chipinge South Education Inspector, Mr Leonard Makwambeni, has urged teachers to invest in immovable property like houses.

Speaking at the burial of one of the long-serving teachers at Rimbi High School, Mr Godfrey Muchezana who was buried at Mutorwa Village recently, Mr Makwambeni, said: “Imagine if we are to move into schools soon after closure of schools and instruct teachers to go to their homes, how many will take heed?

“Look at what Muchezana did, he built a home for his family. As teachers, building a home ought to be our priority.

“This is the quality I liked about the man lying there. If you set aside some money every month, by the end of the year, you would be somewhere to start your journey of being a landlord.

“There are no excuses, ladies and gentlemen. I am happy heads of primary and secondary schools and teachers are here.

“Solidarity is there, I can see, but we need to do more.”

The late Mr Muchezana is survived by his wife Miriam and six children.

A resounding send-off was made for the man who helped the Chipinge English Panel whenever there were workshops meant to equip English teachers with skills to be competent teachers.

Speaker after speaker dwelt at length on Mr Muchezana’s humility and prowess in the teaching of English.

Mr Liberty Dhliwayo, Mr Muchezana’s confidante and fellow senior teacher, spoke about the man’s unshakeable belief in empowering the girl child and the disadvantaged students at the school.

“Godfrey always helped students even when one could see he was visibly ill. His desire to see students succeed is evidenced by his interaction with students that he did not teach directly. He wasn’t partial in his discharge of duties,” said Mr Dhliwayo.

Mr Muchezana’s humility was amplified by Mr Tobias Mubhangi, the English Department Head at Rimbi, who expressed gratitude for being mentored by a capable person in the form of Mr Muchezana. “Godfrey will be sadly missed by the English Department.

He never defied my authority although I was his junior by far. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Rimbi High School headmaster Mr Phineas Mundeta said the gap left by Mr Muchezana was difficult to fill.

He likened it to putting one’s feet into a giant’s shoes.
