TEAM Manicaland, which went into camp on Wednesday ahead of the 12th edition of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games to be held in Masvingo, is eyeing a top three position, the province’s general manager has said.
This year’s Youth Games will be played in Masvingo from Monday to next Saturday and Victoria High will be the command centre though the games will be played at numerous venues across the country’s oldest city.
In an interview last Wednesday afternoon, James Mwonzora, Manicaland Youth Games general manager, confirmed that the team went into camp on Wednesday.
He expressed confidence that the province will snatch a good number of gold medals in different sporting disciplines.
“We have already started camping and we are happy with the preparations so far.
“In fact, we are confident about obvious gold medals from Ruvarashe Muzinde, an athlete from Hillcrest and Tinashe Mutsetse an 800m runner, who used to be a cut above the rest in such competitions.
“There are also a number of sporting disciplines in which we hope to get more gold medals.
“We were number four during last year’s edition, but we are now aiming higher in this year’s competition as we are going to be the hosts in next year’s edition.
“We are aiming at finishing among the top three.
“We faced travelling challenges for competitors especially during the first day of the camping.
“However, we really want to thank Sport and Recreation Commission coordinator for Manicaland, Isaiah Berejena, who worked hard to iron out the problem.
“We also want to appreciate the support given by Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education especially the acting Provincial Education Director, Andrew Chigumira,” he said.
During camping, soccer teams for both girls and boys were camped at St Matthias Tsonzo in Mutasa District, while participants in athletics were at Mutare Boys’ High and Girls’ High respectively.
Participants in basketball, volleyball, handball and athletics were camped at Mutare Boys’ High.
Girls for the same sporting disciplines were camped at Mutare Girls’ High.
