THE Roman Catholic community in Bulawayo has been plunged into mourning following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away this morning in Vatican City, aged 88.
Heartbroken, Bulawayo Archbishop Father Alex Thomas confirmed that a memorial service will be held in the city in honour of the beloved Church leader.
“We are saddened by his passing on. We will have a memorial service here in Bulawayo, which will be finalised soon,” said Father Thomas.
The late Pope—born Jorge Mario Bergoglio—had battled serious health issues for years. He was admitted to Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in February this year after suffering from bronchitis, which later developed into bilateral pneumonia.
After 38 days in hospital, he was discharged to continue recovery at his Casa Santa Marta residence, but never fully bounced back. His respiratory challenges dated back to 1957, when he had part of his lung removed due to a severe infection.
In April 2024, the Pope prophetically approved an updated version of the papal funeral liturgy book, Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, now set to guide his own final rites.
The Vatican is yet to announce the date of the funeral.
From Rome to Bulawayo, the Catholic faithful are united in grief as the world bids farewell to a spiritual giant. Rest in peace, Holy Father.
