THE thieves who broke into the Chinhoyi Municipality offices at the weekend got away with US$13,191 in cash.
Mashonaland West Provincial Police Spokesman, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the break-in.
“I am told that the case was reported and investigations are underway but I do not have the full facts,” said Insp Kohwera.
Acting Town Clerk Simon Marara also confirmed the robbery.
“The thieves stole some money. I don’t know if there are other documents that were taken besides the money. We cannot rule out anything but what I can say is that the thieves broke into the offices through the window in the Director of Finance’s offices.
“They then proceeded to blast our strong room,” said Marara.
He said it is very puzzling how the thieves knew the offices which dealt with finance.
“Why did he select the finance offices only?
“And, the funny thing is that the finance offices are not situated on one wing of the block but they cross to the housing block.
“All housing offices were not touched.”
A Council employee, who requested anonymity, said the thieves might have received information from inside the Council offices.
“The thieves might have had inside information and I hope the police will get to the bottom of the case and arrest those involved in the disappearance of the money, “ he said.
