Thousands of runners from Zimbabwe and across the globe are expected to take to the streets of Victoria Falls this morning for the 2026 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, with organisers anticipating another successful edition of one of Africa’s premier road-running events.
This year’s edition, which has attracted more than 5 000 runners from over 42 countries, is being held under the theme, “Roar Above the Resistance.”
The annual marathon, now a fixture on the regional sporting calendar, will see elite athletes, social runners and fitness enthusiasts compete in the full marathon, half marathon, fun run and specially-abled race categories against the backdrop of Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most celebrated natural wonders.
Competitors will tackle a route that includes the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge, offering breathtaking views of the Batoka Gorge and the Zambezi River while delivering one of the continent’s most distinctive marathon experiences.
Organisers say the event continues to attract growing international participation, reinforcing Zimbabwe’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting world-class sporting events while boosting tourism and business activity in Victoria Falls.
Since its inception in 2006, the marathon has evolved into more than a sporting competition, drawing families, supporters and visitors for a weekend that combines athletics, tourism and community engagement. Hotels, restaurants and tour operators have reported increased activity as participants and spectators converge on the resort city.
Backed by title sponsor Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the event also promotes healthy living and active lifestyles while providing a platform for elite competitors chasing podium finishes and recreational runners striving to achieve personal goals.
With favourable weather conditions forecast and comprehensive safety, medical and logistical arrangements in place, organisers are confident of delivering another successful race as Victoria Falls once again takes centre stage in African distance running.
