AFTER bursting onto the music scene with their debut hit Seq’amabhilidi in 2012, Bulawayo hip hop kwaito group Three Kings seem to have vanished into thin air and rumour has it that the group has split and one of the members has turned to God. Elton “MaEli” Chiwaka, who makes up part of the three member group, was said to have left the group after slipping into a life of drugs and sex, characteristics normally associated with music stars.
In an interview MaEli confirmed that he had indeed turned to God but could not give reasons why saying it was a personal issue.
“I really can’t discuss the details as to why but be rest assured that Three Kings has not disbanded. We are actually working on a single, which we hope will top the charts,” he said.
The group’s manager Thokozani Hlabangana of Defined House confirmed that MaEli had taken time off, at the same time reassuring fans that the group, like any other in the world, was hard at work in the studio.
“Yes, Elton has asked for some time off from the group. He wanted to rediscover himself with the Lord and no one can ever be barred from that as he is a Christian. However, Three Kings are still together and are working on an album set to be released in April 2015. For now they will be releasing a single in November.”
Hlabangana said he respected MaEli’s decision as it would make him a different man that would add value to the group.
“It is rare for artistes take time out from their careers to reconnect with the Lord. I respect Elton for taking time off to be with his creator and we hope that through the wisdom, I am sure he will gain due to his sabbatical, he will be able to churn out good music at the same time spread the gospel,” said Hlabangana.
The Three Kings is a trio made up of Donald Nyoni, Francis Tsuro and Elton Chiwaka. They rose to fame through their hit track Seq’amabhilidi in 2012, which was arguably December 2012’s party song of the year.
