Time catches up with Mujaji

muscle.
He clocked 13,12 seconds and was way beaten by Zhao Xu of China who set a Paralympic and Asian record of 11,06 seconds on his way to winning the first heat.
Running in lane two, Mujaji was just beside Nigeria Johnwill Frank, who finished in 11,12 s, while Russia’s Yury Nosulenko clocked 11,26s. The first two athletes home in the heat qualified. Cote d’Ivoire’s Noumbo Kouame Jean Luc did not start while Mali’s Mahame Sacko was disqualified.
But it was the variation between Mujaji and Xu’s time that revealed that the double gold medallist at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 was now out of touch with the elite league.
Mujaji’s opponents are clearly at peak, averaging 25 years-old, while he is 40.
Nascimento Yohansson from Brazil won the second Heat with a time of 10,94s with Cuba’s Raciel Gonzalez following him on 10,97s.
Early this week, there was disappointment as Nyasha Mharakurwa, the other athlete who represented Zimbabwe in wheelchair tennis, was dismissed by China’s Shingo Kunieda 6-0 6-0 in the second round.
Mujaji, who has evidently piled on the kilogrammes on his frame, participated through an invitational wild card. His time, in all the heats, was only better than Gabriel Cole of Australia who finished in 17,82s.
His coach, Amon Nyaundi, said Mujaji complained of abdominal pains during the warm-up to the race.
“Mujaji said he forced himself to finish the event because he was experiencing stomach pains during the warm-up.
“He said the pain had also surfaced during his training session on Tuesday and hopes were that it would disappear, unfortunately it did not. He had to be taken in a wheelchair and was attended to by the medical staff and they said he must seek medical attention only if the pain persists.
So right now he is resting at the athletes’ village,” Nyaundi said.
