TWENTY young women from Bubi District have taken a significant step towards empowerment, thanks to a donation of tools of trade from Zimbabwe Technical Assistance, Training and Education Centre (Zim-ttech).
The event, held at Tatazela Hall in Inyathi, was a collaborative effort between Zim-ttech, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, and the Ministry of Youth Development, Empowerment and Vocational Training.
The beneficiaries, who are specialising in various fields such as motor mechanics, hairdressing, solar installation, and agriculture, received tools aligned to their profession.
For 19-year-old Ms Blessing Moyo, who is doing motor mechanics at Jairos Jiri Training Centre, the donation is a game-changer.
“I am excited with what I have been given here today. I challenge all young ladies out there to come out of their shells and take up these so-called male domain courses,” she said.
Ms Moyo received a toolbox, safety shoes and four pairs of gloves.
Bubi MP and Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Simelisizwe Sibanda, who presided over the event, praised the young women for their bravery and dedication.
“The young women we speak of today have been brave enough to dedicate their time, minds and effort to invest in their future. Where an opportunity has been presented to them, they have chosen to respond positively and grabbed the opportunity with both hands,” he said.
This empowerment programme is part of the Government’s efforts to uplift young women and girls, in line with Vision 2030.
“We recognise your boldness and capability in pursuing fields of trade that were previously male-dominated. We know you will do well and it is our prayer that other young women follow your story and be inspired as well,” said Dep Minister Sibanda.
He called for the support for businesses owned by young women for them to realise their dreams.
Zim-ttech’s economic strengthening and household officer, Mr Fungai Mazaiwana, noted that the 20 recipients bring to 100 the number of young women who have benefited from their empowerment programme in Matabeleland North province.
Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) play a crucial role in equipping youths with practical skills for employment.
They also typically provide programmes in various fields like carpentry, welding, cosmetology, computer repair and mechanics.
