Torwood clinic reopens after refurbishment

Redcliff’s Torwood Maternal Clinic, which has been closed since 2014, has reopened after the completion of a major refurbishment exercise.

The clinic was shut down after its ageing infrastructure was condemned by health experts.

In an interview, Redcliff Mayor, Councillor Freddy Kapuya said the clinic has since resumed operations after major renovations and refurbishments to the tune of $50 000.

“We have reopened the clinic to the public following a major facelift. The refurbishment exercise gobbled something just above $50 000 but we are happy that residents of Redcliff especially expecting mothers now have a health facility at their door step,” he said.

He said the reopening of the facility has brought relief to Redcliff residents who were relying on Kwekwe District Hospital and other private medical facilities for health services.

“Residents were travelling to Kwekwe and private medical facilities were making a killing on the few who could afford,” he said.

He said the refurbishment exercise and reopening of the clinic was part of the local authority’s 100 day quick win projects. Clr Kapuya said a borehole was also sunk at the clinic due to water challenges that were affecting Redcliff.

“To ensure water is constantly available, we have drilled a borehole and purchased a generator in case of a power outage,” he said.

Clr Kapuya said they had also constructed an incinerator at the clinic. He said the clinic had five nurses while doctors would be visiting it on a rotational basis.
