Tour and adventure operators in Victoria Falls said CAAZ was derailing the growth of the tourism industry by failing to provide a conducive environment through completion of the country’s air travel entry points by speeding up the ongoing infrastructure rehabilitation projects.
“It’s years now that we have had the Victoria Falls International Airport expansion programme on the cards and nothing has materialised.
“As a result we are losing clients to Zambia and it pains us a lot,” said a general manager of one of the tour companies.
In response, CAAZ chief executive officer Mr David Chawota said operators needed to be reminded that business, particularly tourism, has been booming with the same facilities and these can still handle the business volumes.
“Slow rehabilitation is not essentially the inhibitor of tourism growth. We are rehabilitating to remain compliant to operational standards ad infinitum,” he said.
He said CAAZ did not have the required funds to undertake the projects in a short period of time and depended on Government for such capital programmes.
Mr Chawota said Government had always supported infrastructural development and CAAZ had benefited from this support.
“For the last two years funds were allocated towards Harare and J M Nkomo airports projects, hence the progress to date with Harare taxiways having been completed and J M Nkomo terminal building is at a very advanced stage,” said Mr Chawota.
